A Study of Aggregation as a Modeling Tool in Optimal Design

چکیده
In this article we examine the behavior of optimal design models when the parameters are progressively unfixed in a process referred to as design aggregation. While this is a common modeling practice, its consequences on solution properties are not always predictable. Using no special assumptions on problem data, we develop an upper bound result for the aggregation process and highlight the difficulties which arise when even a single parameter is unfixed. When such an aggregated model is in turn parametrically decomposed, we recover the result where sufficiency at the lower level is required for necessary optimality conditions at the upper level. We also present a generalization of the commonly studied “portal frame” problem as a design case study. While aggregation has only benign effects on the solution of this model, interesting new results are obtained when model perturbations more severe than simple aggregation are imposed on this problem. 1corresponding author

Data mining for decision making in engineering optimal design
Often in modeling the engineering optimization design problems, the value of objective function(s) is not clearly defined in terms of design variables. Instead it is obtained by some numerical analysis such as FE structural analysis, fluid mechanic analysis, and thermodynamic analysis, etc. Yet, the numerical analyses are considerably time consuming to obtain the final value of objective functi...
متن کاملOptimal design of supply chain network under uncertainty environment using hybrid analytical and simulation modeling approach
Models that aim to optimize the design of supply chain networks have gained more interest in the supply chain literature. Mixed-integer linear programming and discrete-event simulation are widely used for such an optimization problem. We present a hybrid approach to support decisions for supply chain network design using a combination of analytical and discrete-event simulation models. The prop...
متن کاملProcedural Modeling as an Analytical Tool for 3D Survey in Urban Design Assessment
This paper examines procedural modeling as a tool for 3D modeling creation. Procedural modeling historically has been used for 3D visualization of natural features, but with the release of the software CityEngine in 2008, the technology can easily be adopted also in problem domains dealing with urban environments. Then, we will examine and compare two types of modeling, traditional and proc...

Background and Objective: One of the major challenges facing landfill operation is the pollution caused by leachate infiltration beneath the landfill site. Comprehensive leachate management requires knowledge of production rate and factors affecting it Therefore, in this study, HELP software was used to calculate leachate quantity and analyze input data.
